Canine Good Citizen Prep & Test

FOR DOGS WHO HAVE COMPLETED MANNERS 1 OR SIMILAR

May 2 - June 6
Saturdays
2:30 - 3:30

CGC Prep is an advanced obedience course designed to help you and your dog feel confident, prepared, and ready to test for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification.

This class is not a good fit for teams just getting started with Manners and Life Skills. For those teams, we offer Manners & Life Skills 1.

The CGC is a beloved goalpost in the world of people and their dogs, and I can honor that wholeheartedly. For me, good citizenship is measured not just by the dog's skills, but by the human's ability to read and advocate for their dog. I feel that even if there are one or two things on the list that your dog cannot do for reasons beyond skill (such as separation and being touched by strangers), don’t let that be a reason not to celebrate your good citizen with me!

Over five weeks, we’ll practice the real-world skills required for the 10 CGC test items—polite greetings, loose-leash walking, calm behavior around distractions, and reliable responses that showcase your hard work and connection.

The CGC program, developed by the American Kennel Club, is open to all dogs and emphasizes responsible ownership and life skills for dogs.

We’ll practice together for five weeks, building clarity, confidence, and consistency. The CGC test will be offered during the sixth week, so by test day, it will feel familiar and fun.

Skills covered:

  • Meet a friendly stranger

  • Loose Leash Walking

  • Politely walk past another dog

  • Be comfortable around real-life distractions

  • Be comfortable with temporary separation from handler (SEE ABOVE FOR

    MORE ON THIS)

  • Sit/Down/Stay
